Susan Pieper and I first met in 2013 through the Catholic Spiritual Mentorship Program that is run by the Holy Family School of Faith of the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas under the auspices of Archbishop Joseph Naumann. Over the last seven years, I have had the privilege of walking the journey towards holiness alongside Susan in both prayer and spiritual friendship.
In this podcast, Susan shares what she has most recently been doing, how our Lord has been working in her life to continue to transform her into a saint, and shares some of the stories associated with the many twists and unexpected turns that her life has taken, and how she has found God’s Providence and blessing in the midst of all of it.
Part of our conversation focused specifically upon the Mentorship program offered by the Holy Family School of Faith Institute–a two-year course of study combining eight distance learning courses with four one-week intensive sessions offered in-residence at Savior Pastoral Center in Kansas City, Kansas. The Mentorship program aims to form Spiritual Mentors to serve as guide and companion to others on their journey to holiness. It is designed for Catholics who have a desire to develop a deep prayer and sacramental life, to increase their knowledge of the Catholic faith, to grow in the virtues and a desire to help others do the same.
But most illustrative of the beauty and impact of the Mentorship program is how Susan described it, (and I heartily agree!), that it is “like a foretaste of Heaven.”
As always, our conversation was full of much laughter, joy and encouragement, and reminded me of how important friendship plays in our capacity to be the saints God created each of us to be. I pray that you, too, find this conversation to be similarly uplifting and inspiring in your own journey to grow closer to God and become more like Jesus in the pursuit of holiness.
